SEO Basic Introduction

November 25, 2008

This is just a brief introduction to what is involved in doing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for your site.

Many of these tips are easy enough for you — or your webmaster — to do on your own.

On Page and Off Page

SEO can be divided into two major sections. On Page and Off Page.

On Page are things that you can do directly to your own website. For example:

1. Changing the title of the webpage
2. Modifying the number of keywords on the page
3. Making your keywords bold
4. Adding related keywords to your page
5. Adding more pages to your website

Most of the On Page factors deal with making each page of your site very focused on a particular keyword and presenting the information so that is easy for a search engine — which is just a computer program — to understand.

Off Page are things you do that are outside of your own website. For example:

1. Writing articles and posting them to article directories
2. Social bookmarking your site
3. Posting comments to blogs
4. Posting to forums
5. Getting links from related sites

Most of the Off Page factors deal with getting links to your site. By getting more links, this greatly helps the search engines understand what your site is all about.
